First, create the sphere, using default parameters...

Instead of the approach with the shape extraction, this time we'll do the filleting (bevels) first.Use thenumeric entry mode (TAB key) in lower left of screen to enter a range of '1'. Throw the lasso over the top rim of the band. |

Repeat this for the bottom rim of the band. If necessary, use an orthographics view. |

Now that we have a bevel along the top rim and along the bottom rim, zoom in and select the inner-most band, which can be best done in orthographics view. This selection is not within any tool, just the lasso (right mouse click or Command-click) which lets you make a selection of a subset from the current object. |

The red points clearly indicate which vertices have been selected. You can add more points with additional selections if you missed some. If you have selected some points you didn't want, selected them again to effectively get them deselected. You can select with the lasso or double-click for the bull's eye cursor for deselecting individual vertices. |

Select top view now, and start the Scale tool. However, we don't want uniform scale, as this would make the band larger in the vertical direction too (North-South), so let's do it in two steps, hit the SpaceBar to toggle into only horizontal scale. Notice the amount of scale in the X axis direction in lower left numeric window (0.61 m) |

Hit the SPACEBAR again to toggle into vertical (blue - Z-axis) scaling, and apply the same scale as you chad along the X (red) axis, i.e. 0.61 m. (0.6 in image below, not sure why it's labeled 'Angle') |

Here's after the scale in X and Z have been completed and we're back to a front view. The subset selection is still in effect. |

Now click the part to revert to the entire part without the subset selection. |

Now let's go to the Smooth tool and apply some type of smoothing. Here's one which makes nice use of the 2-step filet in the crease and shows a nice specular highlight with round fillet. |
